Job market share numbers on LinkedIn

Years ago I invented an informal measurement that we used internally at WebLogic to see how we were doing against our competitors.

Back then we used HotJobs which I’m sure would give different results. This time I am going to start with LinkedIn and then will periodically revisit the same searches in the future to see where things are heading since really these numbers are probably just directional indicators rather than relative weightings because of some built in bias that LinkedIn might have. I’m going to do Anywhere and near where I live in San Francisco, just to see how the country is skewed if it is at all:

What can we gather from this chart? Well, if you want a job writing cool software live near San Francisco for starters. If you love IBM or Microsoft, move somewhere else. Unfortunately, it is impossible to get a good estimate of C# because of the limitations of the search engine. Please comment or email with any additions you feel should be added to the list. Or flame me for my unscientific methods. However, if you’re looking for a job, this matters. Now here is something truly silly, lets pretend we are recruiters and rate resumes by keywords! My rating is 64 globally and 59 in Silicon Valley on my resume from 6 months ago and 39/39 from my resume 8.5 years ago.

Try it!
