Oracle 10G XE 


Last week someone asked us if we could run against Oracle instead of PostgreSQL. I said sure, we are based on EJB3 (Hibernate 3.1). Then we went to install Oracle 10G, what a mess. Fortunately, Oracle released XE on Monday and in 2 days our application was ported, running and fully tested using it instead.

iBlog to Blojsom ... not so fast Blojsom


Right now I use a client side tool called iBlog to write all my blog entries. This makes it so I have to use a third party system, Haloscan, to have comments and trackbacks. I would like all this to be on the server, so I tried to convert .... but rolled back.

PostgreSQL now has a native Windows port


PostgreSQL 8.0.0 was released to do and with it a native installer for Windows. This closes one of the big barriers to adoption of the database and because of its superiority in all other areas may actually turn the tide against MySQL.

Linux can never be ready for the desktop


I commented on Cedric's blog entry , so I thought I would make my views more explicit. Linux, the kernel of an OS that includes a bunch of GNU software, can never be ready for the desktop. A particular distribution could be a desktop OS but they are going to have to really commit to something.
